Uziza is an African plant which fruits is mostly refer to as uziza seeds, while the leaf serves as vegetables for spicing a meal. Uziza leaves and seed (Piper guineense) traditionally called, Uziza amongst the Igbo tribe, Iyere amongst the Yoruba tribe,Uda in Hausa, Etinkene amongst the Efik and Ibibio tribe and Ebe-ahinhi akpoke amongst the Edo tribe, Other common names are Benin pepper, Guinea pepper and false cubeb are used for culinary, medicinal, cosmetic and insecticidal purposes.

The leaves, which have a peppery taste, are pale green when fresh, and darker green when frozen, dried, or ground and dried is mostly consumed in the eastern part of Nigeria, it is used in cooking Ofensala, peppersoup egusi soup, ogbono soup. Also used by women after childbirth to enhance uterine contraction and expel retained matter from the womb.

As identified by researches, uziza leaf and seeds has great potential in the treatment and control of some diseases in the body. Such as

HOW IS UZIZA LEAVES AND SEED USED 

1. You can enjoy this plant by preparing soup with the uziza leaves and seed.

2. The leaves can be used when fresh to prepare any meal by washing and shredding it first and then adding it to the food about 15 minutes before bringing it down from the fire or dried, grounded and then added to the meal.

3. For medicinal uses, the leaves are commonly consumed as tea by boiling the fresh leaves and drinking the water as a herbal tea.

4. Grinding up the leaves and seed as thinly as possible and then encapsulating them as a form of daily health supplement.

5. You can grind Uziza leaves and and add them to clean boiled water in a bowl.

6. You can also sprinkle the dried and crushed uziza leaves and seed Into your salad. Otherwise, you can also add the fresh uziza leaves into your green salad or stir fried.
